What is VGO
Formal issuance and production certificate status are shown on Rank and Status. Document version badges do not indicate issuance status.
Identity wording (2026-09-30): the frozen positioning decision states VGO as the machine-world visibility governance system. VGO V1.0 was originally published under the "methodology" label; that label survives only as release metadata and history, not as the system identity.
One-line definition: A system for the optimization and governance of effective visibility growth in the machine-mediated world.
Core goal: Help search, AI, and social platforms discover, understand, trust the evidence about, and recommend your brand.
GEO focuses on how a brand appears in generative AI answers. VGO optimizes effective visibility growth outcomes across the wider machine-mediated world.
VGO (Visibility Growth Optimization) is an open optimization system for growing effective visibility across search, direct answers, generative AI, agents, and emerging discovery surfaces. It encompasses GEO's focus on generative AI and connects SEO and AEO. Starting with real user intent and verifiable organizational facts, VGO guides diagnosis, prioritization, action, verification, and continuous learning. It supports automation where appropriate and builds durable assets organizations can own and maintain.
In practice: Diagnose → Decide → Act → Verify → Learn. The public system defines actions, evidence requirements, and automation boundaries; Omseek develops a separate product implementation. This repository is methodology and guidance, not an installable AI assistant or workflow engine.

V1.0 published methodology: This version includes AEO and the optimization system. It has entered early commercial practice; this is not a claim of independently validated effectiveness or third-party adoption. The v1.0.0-draft release remains a historical snapshot, and the public evaluation protocol retains its separate Draft 0.1 status and frozen baseline.
GEO 2.0 within VGO
GEO 2.0 is our methodology and capability approach for GEO within the VGO. In generative AI contexts, it connects customer decision scenarios, verified brand facts and traceable evidence with diagnosis, prioritized action, execution, ongoing verification and maintenance. Its goal is to help brands be accurately understood, credibly cited, fairly compared and appropriately recommended in relevant contexts.
VGO is the machine-world visibility governance system, covering SEO, AEO, GEO and emerging discovery surfaces such as agents. GEO 2.0 names the GEO approach within VGO; it does not denote the whole system or change VGO’s definition or hierarchy. Omseek is a product implementation based on VGO.
GEO is the general term for Generative Engine Optimization. Here, GEO 2.0 refers specifically to our approach within VGO, rather than an industry-wide version standard. Other GEO practices may also address facts, evidence and long-term outcomes. Effective GEO describes the intended outcome; GEO 2.0 describes the method for pursuing and maintaining it. The name is not a VGO version number.
What is VGO?
VGO (Visibility Growth Optimization) is the machine-world visibility governance system. It starts with real user needs and high-value intent, and systematically grows effective, trusted, and sustainable visibility across search, generative AI, and emerging discovery surfaces.
North Star: Grow More Effective Visibility.
VGO distinguishes visibility from value. A ranking is not automatically effective SEO. A mention is not automatically effective GEO. Exposure becomes useful when it reaches the right audience, in the right intent context, on the right surface, with a meaningful presence.
Conceptually:
Effective Visibility = Right Audience × Right Intent × Right Surface × Right Presence
This is a conceptual model, not a universal scoring formula.
From measurement to action
VGO is not only a set of concepts or metrics. It helps an organization identify machine-perception gaps against verified facts, prioritize valuable user-intent scenarios, plan and carry out work on owned assets and credible external sources, verify observed changes, and feed evidence into the next cycle. See the optimization system and the capability comparison.
| Stage | Required output |
|---|---|
| Diagnose | Intent scenarios, observed representation, verified facts, evidence and gaps |
| Decide | Prioritized opportunities with rationale, constraints and risks |
| Act | Changes to assets, facts, evidence, content or sources, with owners and review points |
| Verify | Comparable observations, factual checks, limits and contrary evidence |
| Learn | Recorded outcomes and revised priorities for the next cycle |
Automation can assist at each stage when evidence, human accountability and appropriate review are preserved. The system does not claim that any particular software implementation already automates every stage.
Core value chain
Human & Intent → Effective Assets → Effective SEO + Effective AEO + Effective GEO → Effective Visibility → Trust → Compare → Recommend → Choose → Measure → Optimize → Learn → Long-term Growth Assets
VGO begins with people rather than platforms. It asks which needs and problem spaces matter before deciding which search queries, generative questions, content, sources, or discovery surfaces should be optimized.
Effective Assets, SEO, AEO and GEO
- Effective Assets are organization-owned or controlled assets built around real user needs and high-value intent that can continuously participate in discovery and decision processes.
- Effective SEO is search visibility that helps the organization be correctly discovered and understood in valuable search contexts and enter the user's decision process.
- Effective AEO is the ability of accurate, useful, verifiable information to be selected and presented in direct answers to relevant user questions across answer-capable search and AI interfaces. An answer appearance alone does not establish accuracy or effectiveness.
- Effective GEO is the ability to be correctly understood, credibly cited, reasonably compared, and recommended by generative systems in high-value problem spaces.
Ranking ≠ Effective SEO. Mention ≠ Effective GEO. Visibility ≠ Value.
SEO, AEO, GEO and VGO
VGO encompasses the generative visibility capabilities addressed by GEO and expands the action scope across surfaces, effectiveness, ownership and long-term learning. This is a difference in scope and evaluation, not a claim that GEO is unnecessary or that VGO guarantees better rankings, citations, recommendations, or revenue. VGO retains GEO's generative-system questions and adds cross-surface coordination, intent relevance, evidence quality, integrity, outcomes where observable, and owned assets that persist beyond individual mentions.
SEO, AEO and GEO are related capability lenses within VGO. SEO addresses discoverability in search; AEO addresses inclusion and accuracy in direct answers; GEO addresses how generative systems understand, cite, compare and recommend an entity. AEO and GEO overlap when a generative system produces an answer. These are analytical lenses, not mutually exclusive channels or a required sequence.
VGO connects their observations to real user intent, owned assets, authority, integrity, measurement and outcomes. Ranking, answer inclusion, mentions and citations are intermediate signals; none proves user choice or business value on its own. See the capability comparison.
Common questions
Is VGO open-source software for GEO? No. This repository publishes a CC BY 4.0 methodology, evaluation principles, and documentation. It does not provide an AI assistant or workflow automation engine. Implementations may be built separately.
Is VGO another name for GEO? No. GEO focuses on generative systems; VGO includes GEO alongside SEO and AEO and assesses whether visibility is relevant, accurate, trusted, and useful in decisions. The disciplines can overlap in an observed answer.
Does VGO replace GEO? No. GEO remains a distinct capability within the broader VGO system. An organization can practice GEO while using VGO to set priorities and evaluate the value and integrity of results across surfaces.
How does Omseek relate to VGO? Omseek initiated and maintains the open system and develops a separate product implementation; product features should not be attributed to this documentation repository.
Owned assets and external signals
VGO treats first-party assets and credible third-party signals as complementary.
Third-party sources support distribution, independent corroboration, citations, authority, and source diversity. Owned assets preserve organization-controlled facts, knowledge, content, evidence, and longitudinal learning.
Permanently owned assets. Continuously changing visibility.
The goal is not to promise permanent rankings or citations. It is to ensure that optimization leaves reusable assets and learning behind.
Visibility surfaces
A Visibility Surface is any digital interface, system, platform, agent, or device that can influence discovery, understanding, citation, comparison, recommendation, or selection.
VGO v1 focuses primarily on search and generative AI while remaining open to future discovery surfaces.
Measurement
VGO separates raw exposure from effective visibility. Public system measurement should be evidence-led, reproducible where practical, and transparent about uncertainty.
The open system defines what meaningful measurement should consider. It intentionally does not publish proprietary weighting models, intent-discovery algorithms, prioritization logic, automation recipes, or commercial implementation methods.
See METRICS.md. Single-scenario public judgments follow the testable draft EVALUATION-PROTOCOL.md. That draft is not a general certification and does not define a universal score.
Integrity
Visibility growth must not come at the expense of truth, provenance, or trust. VGO includes defensive principles for misinformation, entity confusion, suspicious sources, manipulation, and provenance failures.
Origin and stewardship
The VGO was initiated by Omseek in 2026 and is maintained openly as a governance system.
VGO is the system. Omseek is its initiator, founding maintainer, and an implementation platform. The open system is intentionally separate from proprietary product implementation.
Contributing
VGO evolves through evidence, reproducible measurement, cases, research, and open critique. system-level additions should solve demonstrated problems rather than expand terminology for its own sake.
