Formal issuance and production certificate status are shown on Rank and Status. Document version badges do not indicate issuance status.

Status: Part of VGO V1.0 published methodology. The v1.0.0-draft tag remains a historical snapshot; the public evaluation protocol is separately marked Draft 0.1.

GEO focuses on how a brand appears in generative AI answers. VGO optimizes effective visibility growth outcomes across the wider machine-mediated world.

Scope and relationship

GEO addresses generative-system understanding, mentions, citations, comparisons and recommendations. VGO encompasses those capabilities and connects them with SEO, AEO, owned assets, verifiable facts, intent relevance, integrity, action and longitudinal learning. SEO, AEO and GEO overlap in real observations; they are not disjoint channels or mandatory sequential stages.

VGO is an optimization system, not a metrics-only system or an installable GEO toolkit. It guides diagnosis, prioritization, action, verification and learning. Omseek develops a separate product implementation; proprietary implementation features and scores are not universal requirements of the open system.

GEO capabilities inside VGO

GEO capabilityHow VGO encompasses itAdditional VGO question
Generative answer presence and mentionsObserve the answer, entity, question, surface and conditionsIs the scenario relevant to real user intent?
Citations and source workTrace citations and optimize credible source coverageAre claims accurate, supported and maintainable through owned facts and independent corroboration?
Comparison and recommendationObserve and improve how an entity is compared and recommendedIs the comparison fair, factually correct and useful in a decision?
Content and distributionPlan content and source actions for generative discoveryWhich owned assets, evidence and surfaces should be prioritized and who executes the work?
Monitoring and adjustmentRe-observe responses after changesDid effective visibility improve under comparable conditions, and what should be learned?

Four extensions beyond a generative-answer focus

LayerVGO action and evidence
CoverageCoordinate GEO with SEO, AEO, search, direct answers, agents and emerging discovery surfaces; avoid double-counting overlapping answers.
EffectivenessEvaluate audience and intent fit, factual accuracy, credible evidence, integrity and observed decision relevance rather than counting each mention as value.
OwnershipBuild maintainable, machine-readable first-party assets and organization-controlled facts and evidence; use credible third-party sources for distribution and independent corroboration.
CompoundingDiagnose, decide, act, verify and learn across time; keep reusable content, facts, evidence, data and decision records under organizational control.

These are differences in the scope and requirements of the VGO system, not proof that every implementation outperforms every GEO practice. Some GEO practitioners already consider accuracy, owned content, outcomes and long-term effects. VGO explicitly connects these considerations into one cross-surface action and evaluation system.

Example: from appearance to action

A generative answer mentions a product but describes an obsolete capability. Record the full question, answer, citation, time and conditions. Compare the claim with current first-party facts and credible third-party evidence. Prioritize the issue based on user intent and harm; update the owned fact source and relevant content; seek legitimate correction or corroboration where needed. Re-observe under comparable conditions, record whether the claim changed, and retain both successful and unsuccessful results. A mention alone is not evidence-backed Effective Visibility.

Evidence and outcome boundary

Rank, answer inclusion, mentions, citations and recommendations are intermediate observations. A verified, relevant appearance can support a bounded finding of Effective Visibility in an observed scenario. User choice or commercial impact requires additional downstream evidence; before/after change alone is not causal proof. See METRICS.md and the versioned, single-scenario public evaluation protocol draft. The public protocol does not yet validate cross-surface, longitudinal growth outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Does VGO replace GEO? No. VGO encompasses generative visibility work and adds cross-surface action, effectiveness, ownership and learning.

Is VGO just a set of proprietary metrics? No. This public system defines actions, principles and evidence requirements. Private implementation metrics such as VHI, EVR, VCR and OVR are not four required public system indices.

Is VGO software? No. It is a governance system and action guide. Omseek implements parts of it in a separate product, and software capabilities must be stated and verified for that product.

Does VGO rely only on owned sources? No. Owned facts and evidence provide a maintainable foundation; independent third-party sources corroborate and distribute them.

GEO 2.0: a method within the GEO capability

VGO is the machine-world visibility governance system, covering SEO, AEO, GEO and emerging discovery surfaces such as agents. GEO 2.0 names the GEO approach within VGO; it does not denote the whole system or change VGO’s definition or hierarchy. Omseek is a product implementation based on VGO.

GEO is the general term for Generative Engine Optimization. Here, GEO 2.0 refers specifically to our approach within VGO, rather than an industry-wide version standard. Other GEO practices may also address facts, evidence and long-term outcomes. Effective GEO describes the intended outcome; GEO 2.0 describes the method for pursuing and maintaining it. The name is not a VGO version number.

VGO provides the cross-surface methodology. GEO 2.0 applies its shared intent, fact, evidence, action and verification capabilities to generative AI contexts. The four cross-surface extensions above remain VGO-level properties. See the five GEO 2.0 practice upgrades.
