Version: VGO V1.0 published methodology (release notes)

Status: Published methodology in early commercial practice, with AEO and operating guidance. This status does not assert independent validation. The earlier v1.0.0-draft remains historical; EVALUATION-PROTOCOL.md remains a separately versioned Draft 0.1 on its frozen baseline.

1. Purpose

One-line definition: A system for the optimization and governance of effective visibility growth in the machine-mediated world.

Core goal: Help search, AI, and social platforms discover, understand, trust the evidence about, and recommend your brand. These are intended outcomes, not guaranteed platform behavior. Social discovery is within the conceptual scope; V1 evidence and the public evaluation draft focus primarily on search and generative AI.

VGO (Visibility Growth Optimization) is an open optimization system for growing effective, trusted, and sustainable visibility outcomes across the machine-mediated world, including search, direct answers, generative AI, agents and emerging discovery surfaces. It encompasses GEO's generative-visibility work and connects it with SEO and AEO. The system guides diagnosis, decisions, execution, verification and learning; measurement supports these actions rather than replacing them.

VGO begins with real people and high-value intent rather than platforms or raw exposure.

Human First. Intent First. Effectiveness First. North Star: Grow More Effective Visibility.

VGO is not against growth in visibility. It distinguishes raw visibility from visibility that matters.

2. Effective Visibility

Conceptually:

Effective Visibility = Right Audience × Right Intent × Right Surface × Right Presence

This is a conceptual model, not a universal scoring equation.

Visibility Growth in VGO should be understood as the continuous growth of Effective Visibility, rather than the maximization of raw exposure.

3. Core value chain

Human & Intent → Effective Assets → Effective SEO + Effective AEO + Effective GEO → Effective Visibility → Trust → Compare → Recommend → Choose → Measure → Optimize → Learn → Long-term Growth Assets

Being visible is an intermediate state. VGO asks whether that visibility participates meaningfully in discovery and decision processes.

4. Effective Assets

Effective Assets are organization-owned or controlled assets built around real user needs and high-value intent that can continuously participate in search, generative AI, discovery, and decision processes.

Examples may include first-party content, product and service facts, evidence, cases, structured knowledge, documentation, and other maintainable resources.

5. Effective SEO

Effective SEO is search visibility built around real user needs and high-value search intent so that an entity can be correctly discovered and understood in valuable search contexts and enter the user's decision process.

Ranking ≠ Effective SEO.

6. Effective AEO

Effective AEO is the ability of accurate, useful, verifiable information to be selected and presented in direct answers to relevant user questions across answer-capable search and AI interfaces. Record whether the answer is factually correct, whether the entity and its sources are identified appropriately, and what evidence supports the observation. Answer inclusion alone does not establish effectiveness or user choice.

7. Effective GEO

Effective GEO is the ability of an entity to be correctly understood, credibly cited, reasonably compared, and recommended by generative systems in high-value problem spaces relevant to real users.

Mention ≠ Effective GEO.

8. SEO, AEO, GEO and VGO

SEO, AEO and GEO are related capability lenses within the higher-level VGO growth system. SEO addresses search discovery; AEO addresses direct answers, whether in search or AI; GEO addresses how generative systems understand, cite, compare and recommend entities. AEO and GEO overlap for generative answers. Their boundaries depend on the observed surface and question; they are not exclusive channels or mandatory sequential stages.

VGO connects them to human intent, owned assets, authority, integrity, action, measurement, learning and outcomes. GEO focuses on how a brand appears in generative AI answers; VGO optimizes effective visibility growth outcomes across the wider machine-mediated world. Ranking, answer inclusion, mentions and citations do not by themselves prove user choice. See SEO-GEO-VGO.md for the comparison.

9. Visibility Surfaces

A Visibility Surface is any digital interface, system, platform, agent, or device that can influence discovery, understanding, citation, comparison, recommendation, or selection.

VGO v1 focuses primarily on search and generative AI. Future surfaces may evolve without changing the core value chain.

10. Owned assets and external signals

First-party assets and credible third-party signals are complementary. Maintainable, machine-readable first-party assets and organization-controlled facts and evidence form a factual foundation; third-party sources support independent corroboration and reach. Organizations should be able to maintain and migrate their core facts, evidence and learning across providers.

Third-party sources support distribution, independent corroboration, citations, authority, and source diversity. Owned assets preserve organization-controlled facts, knowledge, content, evidence, and longitudinal learning.

Permanently owned assets. Continuously changing visibility.

VGO does not assume rankings, AI citations, or traffic compound permanently. What can accumulate are content, knowledge, entity relationships, data, historical evidence, optimization experience, and organizational capability.

11. Operating loop

Diagnose → Decide → Act → Verify → Learn → repeat. Each stage produces a reviewable output and feeds the next cycle. At the asset level, organizations build, observe, improve and retain reusable facts, evidence, content and learning.

StageGuidance and minimum output
DiagnoseSpecify real users, needs and surfaces; compare observed machine representation with verified organization facts, sources and owned assets; record gaps and uncertainty.
DecidePrioritize opportunities by intent relevance, evidence, expected usefulness, risks, cost and feasibility; record why an action is chosen.
ActDefine changes to first-party assets, facts, evidence, content, external source engagement or integrity responses; identify an owner, review point and publication conditions.
VerifyRetest comparable scenarios and surfaces, check factual correctness and source provenance, retain raw and contrary evidence, and distinguish observations from outcomes.
LearnRecord actions and results, including failures; update facts, priorities and methods for the next cycle without rewriting historical evidence.

Automation may assist observation, gap detection, recommendation, task routing, monitoring and repeatable checks. Implementations should preserve provenance, reviewability, appropriate human approval for consequential external or factual changes, and an override path. VGO does not prescribe a proprietary execution engine or assert that every step can be fully automated. Omseek implements software workflows separately from this public system.

12. Measurement

VGO separates raw exposure from effective visibility and business outcomes.

Public measurement should be evidence-led, reproducible where practical, transparent about uncertainty, and explicit about the population, problem spaces, surfaces, and sampling used.

The open system intentionally does not define proprietary scoring weights, normalization, intent-discovery algorithms, opportunity prioritization, automation strategies, or commercial implementation recipes.

Single-scenario public judgments follow EVALUATION-PROTOCOL.md. The conceptual model must not be used to compute a total score.

13. Integrity

Growth that degrades truth, provenance, or trust fails VGO.

VGO treats misinformation, stale facts, entity confusion, suspicious sources, manipulation, and provenance failures as visibility risks. Defensive work must not become offensive poisoning, fabricated consensus, impersonation, hacking, or attempts to bypass third-party safeguards.

14. What VGO is not

VGO is not:

  • maximum exposure at any cost;
  • a renaming of SEO or GEO;
  • a claim that every ranking, mention, citation, prompt hit, or traffic event has equal value;
  • mass low-quality publishing or fabricated authority;
  • a promise of permanent rankings, citations, or traffic;
  • a universal proprietary scoring algorithm.

15. Extensibility

VGO remains open to future discovery surfaces while keeping the system stable.

New terminology or modules should be introduced only when evidence shows that the existing system cannot adequately explain a meaningful visibility problem.

16. GEO 2.0 within the system

VGO is the machine-world visibility governance system, covering SEO, AEO, GEO and emerging discovery surfaces such as agents. GEO 2.0 names the GEO approach within VGO; it does not denote the whole system or change VGO’s definition or hierarchy. Omseek is a product implementation based on VGO.

VGO (machine-world visibility governance system)
  SEO | AEO | GEO [GEO 2.0 method] | agents and emerging surfaces
  Shared support: intent, facts, evidence, assets, action, verification, integrity, learning
Separate implementation layer: Omseek and other implementations

The capability lenses overlap and are not mandatory sequential stages. Effective GEO remains the intended outcome defined in section 7; GEO 2.0 is the method for pursuing and maintaining it. See GEO 2.0.
